It's hard to believe that the CSTS summer racing season is drawing to a close. It certainly has been a great summer of racing with big, friendly crowds of athletes and spectators packing James Island County Park on each race date. Thanks to everyone for the gracious comments and good will expressed to us over the summer.

As usual the Championship race on August 13th will be the largest and most competitive triathlon in the Series. Twenty-seven Age Group and Division titles will be determined. With the point totals doubled for the Championship race, many titles are up for grabs this coming Sunday. If you haven't looked already check out the Point Standings.

In the Men's Open/Elite Division the top five men are separated by a total of 40 points. The top three, Radek Parnica (190 pts.), Zachary Stroud (180 pts.), and Nick Felix (170 pts.) all "control their own destiny," that is, the top finisher among these three will claim the 2006 Series Championship. Remember, the tie breaker, if points are even, is the higher finish in the final race.

In the Women's Open/Elite Division the top three women are separated by 30 points. As in the Men's Open/Elite Division, Laura Dechamplain (170 pts.) and Staci Redinger (150 pts.) are in control of their own destiny. If either of the two should falter in the race it could open the door for Betsey Reves (140 pts.) to challenge for the top spot.

There are 14 titles in which the the current first place leader must finish ahead of the second place (and in some cases third place) leaders to win the Series title. In the Clydesdale Division Lance Davis and Troy Pusateri are tied for the lead with 180 pts. each. This is going to be good!

There are 15 Age Group and Division leaders with at least two first place finishes (200 pts.). But many of them are being challenged by the second place points leader. Don Leech, in the highly competitive Men 45-49 age group, has two first place finishes for 200 pts. Don has raced in all three triathlons this summer and his lowest finish was a second place finish to William Wiseman in CSTS # 2. William has 190 pts. with a first place finish and a second place finish. Bottom line- they have split their head to head competition this summer and the higher finisher this Sunday will claim the title.

This season has been a great season for the Series Championships. Many age groups, aside from being highly competitive are also deep in the numbers of point contenders. The Clydesdale, women 25-29, Men's Open/Elite, and Men 50-54 all have eight point contenders. The Men 45-49 have 10 deep in the point totals.

The CSTS Championship Race this Sunday will be a fitting climax to a great summer of racing. Come early, stay late.

This year's Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series is dedicated to the spirit of Peter Hastings, MD. The sport of triathlon, the medical profession, and most importantly his family suffered a great loss with Pete's death. Pete finished third last season in the CSTS Men's Open/Elite Division, but his stellar athletic accomplishments paled in comparison to his warmth, his generous spirit, and his devotion to family and community. To have shared these past summers with Pete was indeed a gift.

Yes, Pete was a great athlete. But that wasn't even close to what made him so special. The memories we will keep of Pete help his essence live on; he brought the best in competitive spirit to our races. We try not to get too mushy about how much we love CSTS and the people that participate in such a great shared experience... but we do.

Be careful and see you this summer.
